About Tu Du Hospital
A specialist women’s hospital rather than a general international clinic
Tu Du Hospital is a large public specialist hospital in central Ho Chi Minh City, focused on obstetrics, gynaecology, reproductive medicine and family planning. Its scope makes it materially different from a neighbourhood clinic or a general hospital. Patients may attend for antenatal care, gynaecological assessment, breast or pelvic-floor consultations, menopause care and infertility services, while hospital departments also manage cases that require investigations, procedures or inpatient care.
For an expatriate, the important distinction is not simply public versus private care but whether Tu Du’s specialist pathway fits the problem. A routine concern that only needs an English-language outpatient appointment may be easier to arrange elsewhere. Pregnancy complications, fertility investigations or a condition likely to need specialist obstetric or gynaecological support can make a dedicated hospital more relevant. Readers still choosing between named clinicians and facilities can compare the separate guide to gynaecologists in Ho Chi Minh City.
Different entrances serve different types of appointment
Tu Du operates across several addresses around Cong Quynh and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, so arriving at “the hospital” is not precise enough. The main institutional address is 284 Cong Quynh, but antenatal patients may be directed to other buildings. The hospital’s current antenatal guide places non-service and eligible national-insurance consultations at Area M, Gate 2, 227 Cong Quynh. Service, timed and VIP antenatal consultations are handled at Area N, Gate 5, 191 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. The service unit also covers gynaecology, breast, pelvic-floor and menopause consultations.
There is a further facility on Luong Van Nho Street in Can Gio. This should not be confused with the central District 1 complex. Confirm the exact building, gate and floor when making the appointment, and show the address to a driver rather than relying only on the English hospital name.
Booking, working hours and language planning
The main switchboard is (028) 3952 6568. Timed appointments can be requested through 028 1081 or 1900 2125, while the customer-support route is (028) 3839 5117 or the main number followed by extension 481. The published hours for non-service antenatal consultations at 227 Cong Quynh are Monday to Friday, 06:00–16:30, with that particular clinic closed at weekends. These hours should not be treated as the schedule for every department or for emergency and inpatient services.
English support requires advance planning. The hospital has stated that multiple doctors can speak English during normal working hours, but it does not promise an English-speaking clinician for every shift, especially in the evening or on Saturday. Ask the booking team to confirm the consultation language for the named department and time. If this cannot be guaranteed, arrange a Vietnamese-speaking companion or interpreter for consent discussions, results and discharge instructions.
Preparing for a first visit
Bring identification, prior ultrasound images and reports, laboratory results, prescriptions and a concise medical history. For pregnancy care, include the antenatal record, expected delivery date, blood-group information and details of previous pregnancies or operations. For fertility care, ask whether both partners should attend and which previous test results remain usable before repeating investigations. Do not assume that emailed documents or overseas patient portals will be accessible during registration; keeping local copies reduces avoidable delays.
Patients using Vietnamese national health insurance should verify eligibility and referral requirements before arrival. The antenatal guide expressly distinguishes consultations covered by BHYT with a valid referral from service and VIP pathways. International insurance works differently: obtain written confirmation of coverage and ask both the hospital and insurer whether direct billing is available or whether payment followed by reimbursement is required. The practical differences are explained further in the Vietnam maternity insurance guide.
Choosing hospital care and knowing when to seek urgent help
Tu Du is most relevant when a patient needs coordinated specialist assessment, maternity services, reproductive care or access to hospital investigations and treatment. A service or VIP appointment may reduce movement between reception, consultation, ultrasound and testing areas, but it does not guarantee a particular clinical outcome or that every investigation will be completed at one visit. Confirm costs, clinician, location and follow-up arrangements rather than choosing a pathway from the label alone.
New severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, breathing difficulty, seizures, loss of consciousness or serious pregnancy symptoms should not wait for a routine booking. Contact local emergency services or go to an appropriate emergency department. For unrelated conditions such as major trauma, stroke symptoms or acute cardiac complaints, a general emergency hospital may be more suitable than a specialist women’s hospital.
